Kathleen Johnson March 18, Filed under Lifestyle. It was only 15 years ago that Alabama was the final state to legalize interracial marriage. At one time a forbidden concept, interracial couples have greatly increased in our society today, yet has the racist stigma behind interracial couples truly disappeared? Jackie Leonardo, a year-old Filipino CSUN student, and her boyfriend Jake Webber, a year-old Caucasian man, feel that our society has became more open minded towards interracial couples, and they have never received any racist displays towards their relationship. My entire family met him, and they all approve, so that says a lot about how much my parents have grown away from their traditional roots.
When I first started my column, my first published piece was about interracial dating here at New England College. That was roughly 7 months ago, and I can tell nothing has changed. Yes, our school is diverse, but if you take a look around campus. To my knowledge, this campus has had only one open interracial couple. But this is college, a place to experience new things, to fall in and out of love with ideas.
